Follow up to a story that was posted here a while ago...

I remember the murder of Marwa El Sherbini being posted about here before.

I thought some people might be interested to learn that her killer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison without possibility of parole, which is the maximum possible penalty for murder in Germany.

Two-Party System

I favor approval voting or IRV chiefly because they mean we might get to bring back The Bull Moose party.

I was away from LJ long enough that my cookie expired. :(

We've fallen over sideways and stumbled into Dickens. I'm not sleeping enough, and I'm starting to feel old because I don't have the energy to go out and party. I'm also realizing that I'm feeling my age in a subtler, more destructive way - I don't feel pretty, so I don't feel like dressing up and going out. (Some part of me blames that whole fell-off-the-world thing that happened after xek. The rest blames the delicious free food at work that I *know* I've been eating too much of.)

Life continues apace. I keep thinking about the delayed next-chapter of Kala's story. I have a new dress to make.

...

No time to write, no time!

On a Lighter Note

Salvete, omnes!

I have, of late, become a rather frequent twitterer (primarily due to my interest in space exploration and the large community of "space tweeps" out there). At any rate, being a classics grad student, I am curious as to whether anyone out there makes it a habit to compose their tweets / converse in Latin. If so, I would quite enjoy the opportunity to continue practicing my compositional skills. (Plus, the whole "living Latin" phenomenon is just plain fun!)

Adopted From Korea and in Search of Identity

(NYTimes article link)

Adopted From Korea and in Search of Identity
By RON NIXON

As a child, Kim Eun Mi Young hated being different.

When her father brought home toys, a record and a picture book on South Korea, the country from which she was adopted in 1961, she ignored them.

Growing up in Georgia, Kansas and Hawaii, in a military family, she would date only white teenagers, even when Asian boys were around.

“At no time did I consider myself anything other than white,” said Ms. Young, 48, who lives in San Antonio. “I had no sense of any identity as a Korean woman. Dating an Asian man would have forced me to accept who I was.”

It was not until she was in her 30s that she began to explore her Korean heritage. One night, after going out to celebrate with her husband at the time, she says she broke down and began crying uncontrollably.

“I remember sitting there thinking, where is my mother? Why did she leave me? Why couldn’t she struggle to keep me?” she said. “That was the beginning of my journey to find out who I am.”

Vita question: Outdated references?

Hello, all!

First of all, I am jazzed to be part of this community. I have been learning so much from everyone these past few days about GTA rights and the complicated situation behind unionization.

My situation is this: I got my MA two years ago (Spring 2008), where two professors agreed to be my references for Ph.D. programs, but I waited until Fall 2008 (after graduating) to apply. Unfortunately, that round of apps was a bust, and I decided to stay as a part-timer at a hometown college through the 2009-2010 academic year.

I've kept their letters on InterFolio, but my question is this: are they outdated as references? Should I be looking more toward my writing program administrator and department chair for newer references? N.B.: I am switching concentrations from literature (my MA is in Renaissance) to Rhet/Comp pedagogy for the Ph.D. apps.

Thanks for all feedback!

we're only liars, but we're the best

Women's and Gender Studies is now officially my major. \o/ But I need to get advised again. /o\

Ugh, I'm so behind... I need to write two papers by the end of the month and I've only barely started brainstorming. On the other hand, I checked out four books from the library on Friday and would gladly read and write papers on them by the end of the month. If only I could. :( For the record, the books are about feminism, abortion, and race-class-gender in America, and the last one's called What We Owe Each Other, which I think is slightly socialist. Lol. This is what I read in my free time. This is why I changed my major.

Steven was in Norman this week and we watched Donnie Darko. OMG, SO BIZARRE. I loved it. And surprise!Jake Gyllenhaal! I'm gonna buy DD and add it to my Jake Gyllenhaal collection, which now consists of October Sky, Day After Tomorrow, Brokeback Mountain, and Zodiac. (It's not a very big collection.)

thoughts about the talent show scene )

Yesterday I went to see Men Who Stare at Goats. Aha, it was great. George Clooney is disturbingly surprisingly a hot-ass attractive with long hair and a mustache. *hands* I liked Lyn's idea of the River of Destiny (or Life? whatever) leading your life. How you can spend all your time trying to reach a goal, but if it's not your destiny you'll always be swimming against the current. Find your destiny and let the river carry you there. ^__^

After some initial wavering I decided to get off my ass and go to church. Yay. The speaker... went over several things, actually, but talked about the importance of narrative stories as moral parables and spiritual and educational guides. She referenced The Great Story (or Epic of Evolution), which I had never heard of and think is pretty fabulous! I think the parables could be improved... there needs to be a bit more magic and drama in the stories, methinks. I don't just want the fungus to infect the seaweed. I want them to be ARCH ENEMIES who are STRANDED ON THE LAND and SNARKING until they realize they NEED EACH OTHER. Basically, crack!slash. Why do they gotta be so blasé about it? Huh?

But really, jazz it up, paint some pretty illustrations, and I'll be all over it. I will have children just to teach them the epic of evolution and our own interconnectedness with the planet and all living beings. :)
